How to Install Patio Tiles - Step-by-Step Guide to a Perfect Outdoor Space

A beautifully designed patio extends your living space outdoors and creates comfort and style.
But choosing the right tiles is just the beginning – proper installation is crucial for ensuring
your patio is durable, weather-resistant, and easy to maintain.

To help you create a long-lasting and stable patio, we have prepared a step-by-step guide for
the perfect installation of patio tiles.

Preparation – Choosing & Planning the Location

Before starting the installation, careful planning is essential. Consider the following:

Where should the patio be built? (e.g., directly attached to the house or as a separate
garden area)

What size should it be?
Which tile format and pattern best suit your design?

Tip: Draw a layout plan to calculate the exact number of tiles needed.

Ground Preparation – A Stable Base for a Long-Lasting Patio

A well-prepared foundation is crucial for the stability and durability of your patio. We recommend
installing patio tiles on a gravel bed, as this allows for better drainage and prevents water buildup.
Steps for Proper Ground Preparation:

🔹 Excavate the area – Remove about 20–30 cm of soil and clear any roots or stones.
🔹 Apply a layer of gravel or sand – A minimum 4 cm thick layer of gravel (4-8 mm grain size)
provides a stable, water-permeable foundation.

🔹 Level and compact the surface – Use a compactor or roller to evenly distribute and
stabilize the base.

Important: The gravel base should be at least 4 cm thick. With the tiles included, the total height
will be around 6 cm. 3.

Laying the Tiles – Arranging Your Patio Tiles Correctly

Now comes the creative part: laying the tiles. Start in one corner and work your way across
the patio. Tips for a Perfect Installation:

Ensure precise alignment – Start with straight edges to prevent misalignment.
Follow the selected pattern – Popular choices include straight, staggered, or diagonal layouts.
Maintain even spacing – Use tile spacers for uniform joints.

Recommendation: Check out our 3 mm tile spacers for a precise and professional look.

Filling the Joints – Ensuring Long-Term Stability

Once the tiles are in place, the gaps between them must be filled with an appropriate material:

🟢 Cement slurry or grout – Creates a solid, durable connection.
🟢 Jointing sand – A more flexible option for tiles laid on gravel.

Tip: A standard joint width of 3 mm ensures a clean and uniform appearance.

Curing & Cleaning – Final Adjustments

After jointing, the patio needs a thorough cleaning:

Let the joints dry completely – The curing time depends on the material used. The floor
should only be used after full drying.

Remove excess grout or mortar residue – Use a damp cloth or specialized tile cleaner.
Check for evenness – If any tiles are uneven, gently lift and adjust the base before replacing them.

Note: After winter, slight movements of individual tiles may occur due to temperature changes.
Simply lift the affected tile, smooth out the base, and reinstall it.

Final Touches – Protecting Your Patio Tiles

To enhance durability, consider sealing the tiles with an impregnation coating, which provides:

Additional protection against moisture & dirt
✔ A longer lifespan and easier maintenance

Done! Your patio is now ready for relaxing outdoor moments.

Conclusion – How to Lay Patio Tiles Correctly

With the right preparation and techniques, you can lay patio tiles quickly, securely, and professionally.
